Navigator & Portfolios Server Migration Test Plan

A comprehensive checklist for migrating both Navigator & Portfolios to a new IIS server.

Test Environment

Target Server: This plan is designed for the new pre/prod server svciissompd before production deployment.

Phase 0: Pre-Deployment Server Setup

Environment Provisioning

Ensure the new pre/prod IIS server (svciissompd) is correctly provisioned before deploying the application.

.NET Framework

Confirm .NET Framework 4.7.2 is installed on the server.

IIS Roles & Features

Confirm necessary IIS roles (e.g., ASP.NET 4.7.2, Windows Authentication) are installed.

SSL Certificate

Install and bind the SSL certificates for https://navigator.medschool.pitt.edu/, navigator.pitt.edu and portfolios.hs.pitt.edu to the site in IIS.

Firewall Rules

Verify firewall rules allow traffic from the new web server to external resources:

Database: SVCSQLPROD20.HS.PITT.EDU (Port 1433)
File Server: univ.pitt.edu (Ports 445/139)
Mail Relay: smtp.pitt.edu (Port 587)

Environment Variable

Set the system environment variable NAVIGATOR_INSTANCE to som or folio as required for testing.

Phase 1: Deployment & Initial Smoke Test

Application Startup & Configuration

Goal: Ensure the site loads without any configuration or startup errors.

Deploy Application & Configure IIS

Copy app files, create the application pool, and set up the website in IIS.

Validate Configuration File

Review appsettings.svciissompd.som.json to confirm all paths and connection strings are correct.

Application Startup Test

Navigate to https://localhost/ on the server.
Expected Result: The application's login page loads without any HTTP 5xx server errors.

Check Startup Log

Check the log file at \\univ.pitt.edu\svc\SVCJobFarm\Prod\EDUTECH\logs\navigator-test-.txt.
Expected Result: The log contains the "Navigator Starting Up..." message with correct environment details.

Phase 2: "Happy Path" End-to-End Test

LRP Portfolio Workflow

This workflow validates all major integration points by simulating a real user process.

1. Login & Database Read

Log in as a test **student**. This verifies IIS, AD authentication, and database connectivity.
Expected Result: Student logs in and sees their dashboard.

2. File System Write

As the student, upload a document to the "Project Proposal".
Expected Result: File uploads without error and appears in the list.

3. File System Read

Click the link to download the document you just uploaded.
Expected Result: The file downloads successfully.

4. Email Notification (SMTP)

Log in as a test **Mentor** and approve the student's "Project Proposal".
Expected Result: An email notification arrives at cmt34@pitt.edu.

5. Scheduled Tasks (Hangfire)

Navigate to the Hangfire dashboard at /hangfire.
Expected Result: The dashboard loads and shows at least one active server.
